There is no big secret to having a great looking lawn. No matter what type of grass you choose, whether it is St. Augustine, Bermuda, Zoysia or Fescue, there are only three main things you have to consider: mowing, watering and fertilization. These are the basic neccesities of lawn care, Austin ,however, can be tough on grass sometimes, so if you want to go the extra mile you can add things like aeration, de-thatching and pest and disease control. It is always good to remember that if you are having constant problems with things like fungal infections, St. Augustine decline and pests in general, there may be an underlying problem in the soil quality. The answer is to do a soil test. It sounds like technical hassle, but don’t be dicouraged. The local Travis County Extension Office is there to help with advice and soil testing kits. Follow the link to their website. http://www.co.travis.tx.us/agext/. Rule number one for having a great looking lawn in Austin is to mow on a regular basis. Grass is one of the few plants of the planet that actually benefits from being cut, no doubt a defense mechanism from being chewed on by animals for eons! It suits grass to get rid of that old growth at the top of the leaf to allow for new growth underneath. This also promotes a much more lush and thick lawn, because if you don’t let it grow up, it’ll just grow sideways instead. To avoid stressing the plant try not to cut more than one third of the leaf length at any one time. To cut more than that is to invite uneven growth patterns and a shallower root system – another reason we at Got Mow? suggest mowing once a week for Austin lawn care. Secondly, we have watering. Hello? Duh factor five, captain! Everyone knows they have to water the lawn to make it grow, but few people know how to do it properly. Let’s start with watering times. Always try to water between dawn and ten o’clock on your watering day and, if you need to, between seven o’clock in the evening until dark. Don’t water overnight if you can avoid it because that will promote the fungal infection known as brown patch in St. Augustine lawns. We’ve all seen it and nobody wants those unsightly dead areas in the middle of the turf, especially when it can be spread with contact with the wheels of the mowers used by your lawn service. Austin is rife with this problem so make to to water only at the appropriate times. Any grass only needs about an inch of water a week to remain vigorous. Generally speaking, pop-up sprinkler heads deliver about half an inch in twenty-five to thirty minutes, rotor sprinklers about a quarter of an inch an hour, so you can adjust your sprinkler controller accordingly if you are watering twice a week. However, not all sprinkler heads are the same, so to make sure put a rain guage or an empty tin on the lawn and see how long it takes for the sprinkler system to deliver that half inch. Lastly, we have fertilzer. You don’t need to throw tons of the stuff on your lawn all year long to keep it healthy – in fact, if you do that you will most likely turn your grass into an addict. You only need about one pound of nitrogen per one thousand square feet of lawn annually. Therefore, using a generic fertilizer with an NPK rating of 15-5-10 (the first number being the nitrogen content), you will require six and two-third pounds per one thousand square feet. A forty pound bag will cover around six thousand square feet.
The continuing drought has made watering and keeping a great-looking lawn more of a challenge with general lawn care. Austin, with the water supply dwindling, has instigated its four stage water regulations in accordance with the Drought Contingency Plan. But do not give up hope, even watering once per week it is still easy for a modest sized yard to get enough water to look green and healthy. The secret is knowing how much water is being put down by your system, as we mentioned earlier, and then programming the controller appropriately. This can be a daunting task for some and, unless you know what you are doing, you can take a stab at it and make matters far worse. This is why we have an in-house professional who can take care of all your sprinkler system programming needs and repairs. Please go to our irrigation page for more information. Also keep in mind that the City Of Austin can change the water restriction rules at any time, so information on this page may not be accurate from month to month. It is always a good to keep abreast of the latest developments at the city’s waterwise website here: http://austintexas.gov/department/water. The City will also offer a free water audit to those qualifying and will also help you replace that old or defective irrigation system control box that’s been hanging in the garage since Nineteen Thirty-Five! So, do not ever think that just because we are in a drought that you cannot have a lush and green lawn. With the proper help it is possible.
